The Lives of Buildings
Open House and English Heritage in the Story of London Festival
June 26–28 2009
Join us in a celebration of some of London’s most fascinating and inspiring architecture. Over the last weekend of June, Open House, in conjunction with English Heritage, will present ‘The Lives of Buildings’ as part of the celebration of London’s past, present and future with the Mayor's Story of London Festival.
Architecture is the foundation of the city’s everyday life, but how often do we consider how architecture itself has a life? London has a wealth of amazing historic architecture nestled side by side to some of its most exciting contemporary buildings. But what happens when these two worlds engage? Through an exciting selection of venues and a stimulating programme designed to provoke and inspire, ‘The Lives of Buildings’ will show the links between historic and contemporary.
The programme will explore how London's architecture contributes to its continuous renewal, but also look at the positive impact both historic and contemporary architecture has had on users and communities. And just as important, what’s happening now? How are we adapting, refurbishing and extending historic buildings to sustain the future life of the city?
‘The Lives of Buildings’ will encourage Londoners, young and old, to join the debate on how we can meet the challenge of making the architecture around us today work for our future generations.
The 'Lives of Buildings' will run from 26 to 28 June at venues across the city. More information on specific events will be announced shortly, so remember to check back soon for further details.
