It is hard to exaggerate the scale and scope of the changes London will see in the next few years. An indication is given by the new mayor, Boris Johnson, in his report Planning for a Better London (July 2008).

But long before Mayor Johnson’s promised radical revision of the London Plan expected in 2012, there will be changes, big and small to the face of London. Or rather, to the faces of the boroughs. The agenda is already filling up, and Open House design advocacy programmes deals with many of the issues. These include the architectural quality of the new and rebuilt schools; the conundrum of providing houses that are affordable, sustainable and brilliantly designed and built; the development of people-centred spaces where art and sport can co-exist; the future of shopping malls in the shadow of a possible recession and the planned and gradual greening of our capital as the energy crisis looms.
